And how many puppies do you expect to be born in your upcoming litters this year?
Our females average 4-6 puppies per litter.
When it is our turn to choose a puppy would we all be allowed to come out and interact with the "unadopted" puppies to see which one melted our hearts the most and seemed the best fit for our family?
Yes, we have visitors often to see our cavaliers. When it’s your turn to select a puppy, you’re welcome to come see the puppies and make your selection. We start the adoption process at around 3 weeks of age. We start early so hopefully the family will fall in love with the puppy before it arrives at their new home. We send videos a couple of times a week while you wait for your new puppy.
What about socialization and potty training?
We socialize the puppies with our cat, adult dogs, and other people. Socialization is very important for puppies. We work with them on potty training. Most are fully or very close to being potty trained when they leave for their home. When the puppies are weened, Kim and I watch Netflix with the puppies each night. This gives us a chance to work on potty training with each puppy.
At what age do they leave?
The puppies can’t see or hear the first two weeks. They open their eyes around 10-14 days. Their ear canals slowly open and they can hear around the same time. Everything is by smell until that point. They start to take steps and walk between three and four weeks of age. Mom weens them around 4 weeks old. We start them on high quality wet food at that time. We cover it with water soaked dry food and puppy milk replacer. They will be on all dry food at 6 weeks of age. They receive a full vet exam and distemper/parvo vaccinations at 7.5 weeks old. They are ready for their home around 8-weeks old.
What vaccinations do they need?
Each puppy receives a full vet exam and distemper/parvo vaccinations at 7.5 weeks old. The distemper/parvo vaccination is one shot and administered under the skin. It’s not painful for the puppies. They need three rounds of distemper/parvo vaccinations approximately three weeks apart. One from our vet and two follow-up vaccinations from your vet at approximately 11 and 14 weeks of age. Most vet administer an annual Bordetella vaccination (kennel cough) at 14 weeks of age. They will also need a rabies vaccination. Some vets administer this vaccination at 14 weeks of age and some want them to come back at a later age. Most vaccinations are $15-20 each plus the cost of the exam.
What age should they be spade or neutered?
Most vet recommend around 6-months of age. Cavaliers hit puberty between 9-12 months of age. It’s important to get the procedure performed before puberty. A small percentage of vet recommend waiting until after females have their first cycle to spade. You should talk with your vet to consider the options.
How long does the puppy eat dry puppy food?
They should eat puppy food until after they are spade/neutered or one year old…whichever comes first. Slowly move them to adult food. 75% puppy food and 25% adult food for 2-3 weeks, 50% puppy food and 25% adult food for 2-3 weeks, 25% puppy food and 75% adult food for 2-3 weeks, and then all adult food. The process to migrate the puppy should be over a couple of months.
